Archibald Beviss is my grandfather, who left Devon on the Buffalo from Portsmouth, coming from Wambrook, Devon, and docked in Port Adelaide. He and his two brothers were sent to SA as teenagers, and indentured to pastoralists north of Port Augusta. One brother Edward (Ned) returned to England, bit John (Jack) and Archibald (Archie) remained and become notable pastoralists. Interesting to note that my father is also Archibald, and his third Christian name is Kidman. My grandfather and Sydney Kidman were neighbors, having a close association. It is not surprising then that Dad got Kidman as one of his Christian names. This practice was not uncommon.

Thanks for sharing that fascinating history Richard. This record from the SA passenger lists shows Archibald Beviss as coming on the Glenelg (if you click on the voyage information top right there's more information and a link back to the ship). The newspaper articles linked from Trove also show Archibald Beviss as arriving in 1876 on the 'Glenelg'. Perhaps another person by the same name, or the wrong ship name recorded somewhere along the line.
